Autumn in the scottish highlands - 2026 TOUR
Embark on an unforgettable photographic adventure into the wild Scottish Highlands this autumn, a season when the land is ablaze with vibrant reds, golds, and russet tones. Under the guidance of professional wildlife photographer Richard Campion and multi award-winning nature photographer William Jones-Warner, you’ll witness the raw drama of red deer stags clashing during the rut, their echoing bellows reverberating across mist-draped glens.
Along the way, you’ll capture thundering waterfalls and vast, untamed landscapes at the very height of their autumn splendour. This is more than a photo-tour — it’s an immersion into the wild spirit of Scotland, where every frame tells a story of nature’s power and beauty.

Itinerary
Day One – Arrival & Introduction
You will arrive in the afternoon, where we’ll meet you at house (or station) and transfer you to ther accommodation in the heart of the Highlands. Once you’ve had time to settle in, myself and William will give a short presentation introducing the landscape, its wildlife, and what makes this season so special. In the evening, we’ll enjoy dinner together and talk through the days ahead—what we might see, and how best to approach photographing it.
Day Two – Photographing the Red Deer
After an early breakfast, we’ll prepare our packed lunches and head out for a full day dedicated to photographing the iconic Red Deer in the autumn rut. Along the way, we may also encounter other wildlife and dramatic Highland scenery. Later, we’ll return to our accommodation to go through images together before sitting down to dinner.
Day Three – Another Day in the Field
The group will split into two. One group will spend the morning in the hills photographing the Red Deer, giving us plenty of time to refine our techniques and capture different behaviours and settings. The second group will focus on landscapes and waterfalls. We will then stop for lunch before switching over. In the evening, we’ll gather at the house to relax, review the day’s work, and share further image and editing ideas before dinner.
Day Four – A Flexible Wildlife Day
This day, we will have an earlier breakfast, make our packed lunch and head over to the Cairngorms National Park to spend the day photographing red squirrels and crested tits. The groups will be split into two again, allowing for four people plus a guide at each location.
Day Five – Departure
We’ll share a final breakfast together before leaving the Highlands and returning to the train station for your onward journey.
Fitness required for your trip?
This tour requires you to have a good level of fitness. When photographing the Red Deer it is possible to walk up to 5km, but this of course depends on where the animals are at the time and it could be much, much less.
We’ll be out all day and this ensures we can walk at a leisurely pace and take plenty of breaks, which also provides great opportunities to take in the surrounding landscapes. We will also keep you fuelled with hydrated with cake and hot chocolate.
