Discover the Wild Beauty of the Isle of Mull: A Photo-Tour with Award-Winning Wildlife Photographer, Richard Campion
Step into the wild heart of the Isle of Mull on an unforgettable late-September photo-tour, led by renowned wildlife photographer Richard Campion. This exclusive experience offers an exceptional opportunity to photograph two of Mull’s most captivating species, Wild Otters and White-Tailed Eagles against the dramatic landscapes and changing colours of the island in early autumn.
September is a magical time to explore Mull. As summer gives way to autumn, the island takes on a different character, with quieter roads, rich golden light and spectacular coastal scenery providing the perfect backdrop for wildlife photography. Our primary focus will be on finding and photographing Otters and White-Tailed Eagles, with time and opportunities to capture the many other species that make Mull such an extraordinary wildlife destination.
Mull’s wildlife is wonderfully diverse, and you never quite know what might appear around the next headland or across the next sea loch. Previous tours have produced memorable images of Red Deer, Seals, Hen Harriers, Short-eared Owls, Minke Whales, Dolphins, Oystercatchers and many other species. While no wildlife encounter can ever be guaranteed, the island consistently delivers exciting photographic opportunities.
With a full-time career in wildlife photography, Richard Campion has gained international recognition for his work, with multiple publications and awards to his name. He brings not only extensive photographic knowledge, but also an intimate understanding of Mull’s wildlife, habitats and changing conditions. Whether you are an experienced photographer looking to refine your technique or simply passionate about wildlife and photography, Richard’s personalised guidance will help you make the most of every encounter and return home with images to be proud of.

Itinerary
Day One – Arrival on Mull
Arrive on the enchanting Isle of Mull, where your wildlife photography adventure begins. You will meet with Richard at the delightful property in Tobermory at 6:00 PM for a warm welcome, a chance to settle in, and an overview of the exciting days ahead.
Day Two – Wildlife Photography on the Water
Following breakfast, we embark on a private, chartered boat for an exclusive 3-hour expedition in pursuit of the majestic White-Tailed Eagles. The afternoon will be dedicated to capturing the playful Otters in their natural habitat, as they explore the shoreline and waters around Mull, providing a wonderful opportunity for intimate and atmospheric wildlife photography.
Day Three – Early Morning Otter Hunt & Afternoon Wildlife Photography
The day begins early, with a thrilling search for Otters at dawn. The soft autumn light and quiet conditions can provide some of the most rewarding opportunities to photograph these charismatic animals as they begin their day along Mull’s coastline.
After a nourishing breakfast back at the property, you will venture out again in the afternoon, exploring further into the wild beauty of Mull in search of its iconic wildlife. Depending on conditions and recent sightings, this could mean more opportunities with Otters, or searching for Short-Eared Owls, Hen Harriers, Red Deer and other species that make Mull such a spectacular destination for wildlife photography.
Day Four – Autumn Wildlife of Mull
After breakfast, we head out for a full day exploring some of Mull’s most productive wildlife locations, with the day shaped around the best opportunities available at the time. Autumn brings a wonderful atmosphere to the island, with changing light, dramatic coastal conditions and a rich variety of wildlife to discover.
Our primary focus will once again be Otters, giving you further opportunities to photograph these remarkable animals in their natural environment. We will spend time working the coastline, looking for individuals feeding, swimming, grooming and interacting amongst the rocks and seaweed. With patience and careful positioning, there may also be opportunities to capture intimate behavioural images as well as wider environmental portraits.
The day will not be limited to Otters, however. Mull’s autumn landscape offers the possibility of encountering a fantastic range of wildlife, including Red Deer, Hen Harriers, Short-Eared Owls, White-Tailed Eagles and other birds of prey. We will remain flexible throughout the day, adapting our plans to make the most of the weather, light and latest wildlife sightings.
The emphasis will be on spending time in the field, finding wildlife in beautiful autumn conditions and maximising the photographic opportunities Mull has to offer. Whether that means returning to a particularly productive otter location or following fresh sightings of another species, the day will be guided by the wildlife rather than a fixed itinerary.
Day Five – Final Morning Photography Expedition
After checking out by 10:00 AM, we’ll squeeze in one last photographic adventure. Embark on a final outing to search for Otters and other wildlife, making the most of your final hours on Mull and hopefully capturing one last memorable encounter before departing the island.

What Previous Participants Said
“I spent an amazing week on the Isle of Mull with Richard photographing otters and other wildlife. The group size is kept small so Richard can give individuals as much or as little help as they might need whatever their ability as a photographer. His knowledge of wildlife and photography is superb as is his fieldcraft skills. He puts your needs first and will leave his camera at home to make sure he has time for you. I came away with a fantastic portfolio of images and am already looking forward to another trip with Richard.” - Keith Humphrey
Had an amazing time on the Isle of Mull tour. Richard was leading the tour and his lovely wife was making sure that we were all well fed and taken care of, preparing meals, plus coffee and snacks for our breaks while out in the field. We had loads of good sightings and plenty of opportunity for taking images. Richard was giving all his time to make sure we were happy with our images and he was always available for advice - he did NOT carry a camera because he wanted to offer all his attention to the group! He is very knowledgeable and was making sure that wildlife was undisturbed. Even during his free time, he was available for critique and for advice on photo editing. All in all a great experience! I will definitely join him again on his tours and workshops! - Stavros Eleftheriou
